What Is Hip Replacement Surgery?
Hip replacement surgery (also called total hip arthroplasty) is a common procedure to relieve chronic pain and restore function in hips damaged by arthritis, injury, or other conditions. According to the American College of Rheumatology about 544,000 hip replacements are performed annually in the U.S., with osteoarthritis being the most common reason. The average age for a first-time hip replacement is around 66 years.
Approximately 7 million Americans live with a hip or knee replacement, highlighting the procedure’s prevalence. Up to 10–20% may continue to experience long-term discomfort without proper rehabilitation.
Surgical Options
Hip replacement can be performed using different approaches. The choice depends on your anatomy, surgeon preference, and recovery goals.
Anterior Approach
The surgeon accesses the hip from the front of the hip, between muscles rather than cutting through them.
Often associated with less post-operative pain, smaller scars, and faster initial recovery.
Allows early mobility, though long-term outcomes are similar to other approaches.
Posterior Approach
The surgeon accesses the hip from the back of the hip, gently moving muscles to reach the joint.
Has been the traditional approach for decades and is widely practiced.
Provides excellent visualization of the joint and is versatile for complex cases.
Post-operative precautions may be required to reduce dislocation risk (avoiding certain hip positions).
Both approaches are safe and effective.
